The Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing was founded in 1869. But this is the first time the top leaders at the school are both deaf. Principle Michelle Eisan-Smith is deaf and so is assistant Jennifer Greenfield. Eisan-Smith said:

“I am very grateful to Boston Public Schools and the interview committee who has given us these opportunities to really be as inclusive as possible and to prioritize deaf representation, especially for our community. It’s an amazing experience, such an honor. When I first found out, honestly my jaw hit the floor.”
