Lawsuit: Police detain deaf woman, make daughters interpret for her

A deaf woman and her daughter are suing the North Las Vegas Police Department for "unlawful and discriminatory practices."

Officers had the 11-year-old twins of Andrea "Dre" Hollingsworth interpret for her while she was handcuffed and the police wore masks—making it impossible for her to communicate. She had livestreamed the April interaction and now The National Association of the Deaf is helping her. Read more about the case from the NAD here. CEO Howard Rosenblum says:

We hope the lawsuit will set a positive precedent to ensure that the police cannot require family members, especially children, to interpret, and instead get a qualified professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. We also expect the police to treat deaf and hard of hearing people with respect during any situation.

The North Las Vegas Police Department said the city of North Las Vegas had no comment.
